NYC Night Bus Tour: Every Option Compared

An NYC night bus tour is an easy way to see New York by night without planning a route. This page compares the bookable night tours on the site, the night tours that come free inside hop-on hop-off tickets, departure times, sunset by season, what you actually see after dark and what to wear. For lights tours to Dyker Heights, see the NYC Christmas bus tour page instead. The bookable tours are compared on NYC Bus Tours.

Quick answer The short answer

A NYC night bus tour costs from $48 per person for a 3-hour enclosed bus with a DUMBO photo stop, or $69 for a 90-minute open-top double-decker. Both leave from the Times Square area with a live English guide. Some hop-on hop-off tickets already include a night tour, so check before you book.

Key takeaways

The Night Bus Tours Compared

Three guided night tours run from Midtown and each shows the city from a different angle. The figures below come from the tour listings on this site, which tracks bookable NYC bus tours and their card prices.

Price, Length, Vehicle and Stops

The night tours differ mainly in vehicle and direction. The open-top double-decker stays in Manhattan and crosses into Brooklyn with no stops. The enclosed luxury coach adds a real photo stop in DUMBO and costs less despite running twice as long.

The minibus is the only one that leaves Manhattan, for the skyline from the New Jersey waterfront. All three carry a live guide. Prices are the US dollar card prices in the tour listings.

Open Top or a Roof, and Who Each Suits

The open-top double-decker is the classic night ride. You sit above the traffic at 6:00 PM or 8:00 PM with a live English guide and NYC trivia, and the route crosses the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn. There are no stops, so nothing interrupts the 90 minutes. It suits first-timers who want the wind-in-your-hair version and a warm evening. In cold or wet weather an open deck is a real cost, so read the season notes below first.

The enclosed coach trades the fresh air for comfort and a longer route at a lower price. At $48 for 3 hours it is the cheapest of the three, it covers you from the weather, and the DUMBO photo stop is for the Brooklyn Bridge and the skyline. It suits anyone visiting between late autumn and early spring, and photographers.

The minibus is a small-group or private 4-hour evening run. Its stops are on foot: an hour at Liberty State Park and the Empty Sky Memorial, Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, the Frank Sinatra statue and Hamilton Park on top of the Palisades. It suits travelers who want to stand still with a skyline view instead of seeing it from a moving deck, and who like small groups. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included only on the private option.

Night Tours Inside Hop-On Hop-Off Tickets

Both big hop-on hop-off operators in New York run a night tour, and on some tickets it is already included. Before you book a standalone night ride, check what your day ticket covers.

Big Bus Night Tour

Big Bus New York runs a 2-hour live-guided night tour that leaves Stop 1 at M&M's World on 7th Ave and W 48th St and returns there. The ticket page lists departures at 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM nightly, while the service information page shows a single 7:00 PM departure with one tour per evening, so confirm the time for your date. Guests should arrive 30 minutes early. On Big Bus day tickets the night tour is attached to the 48 and 72-hour options, and those tickets also add a Circle Line cruise on the 72-hour version. The full ticket is covered on the Big Bus New York page, and the combined bus, cruise and Empire State version is on the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus with Empire State and Cruise page.

From 3 December to 4 January the regular night tour is replaced by the Holiday Lights Night Tour, which sees the city's seasonal decorations instead of the standard route. Big Bus runs every day except Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve, and its day loops end by late afternoon, so the night tour is the Big Bus product for the evening.

TopView Night Tours

TopView runs two kinds of night departure. The live-host night tour leaves daily at 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM from Times Square North on 7th Ave between 47th and 48th St and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes. The audio-narrated night tour runs 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and 6:00 PM to 12:00 AM on Friday and Saturday, with GPS-narrated audio at every seat.

TopView says its Night tour goes through Times Square, Greenwich Village, Chinatown and Little Italy, and the Brooklyn and night tours are nonstop with no hop-off. TopView says the Night tour ends at 10 PM in winter and 12 AM in summer. Note one conflict the operator's own pages carry: the FAQ says the night tour is English only, while the homepage suggests 11 languages on night tours, so ask before counting on another language.

The full pass is reviewed on the TopView NYC page.

The Departure-Time Conflict

The Big Bus night tour timing differs between the operator's own pages. The night tour ticket page lists 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM departures for the 2-hour tour. The service information page lists a 7:00 PM departure from Stop 1 with one tour per evening.

Both come from Big Bus, so the practical advice is to arrive 30 minutes before whichever time your booking confirms. TopView has no such conflict, its live-host departures are 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM daily. Big Bus hop-on hop-off tickets must be activated in the Big Bus Tours app on the day, and non hop-on hop-off tickets just show in the app to the driver.

Holiday Lights Night Tour Window

From 3 December to 4 January Big Bus swaps its regular night tour for the Holiday Lights Night Tour. If your trip falls in that window, the holiday version replaces the regular tour, so plan around it. If you want neighborhood Christmas lights rather than Midtown decorations, that is a different product entirely: the bus tours to Dyker Heights are covered on the NYC Christmas bus tour page, and most Dyker Heights displays stay up until the end of the first week of January.

What You See After Dark

New York after dark is mostly about light, and each night tour is built around a different set of it. Here is what the routes actually pass, from the tour records and official sources.

Times Square and Midtown

Almost every night departure starts here. The Times Square Alliance district runs from 40th to 53rd Street between 6th and 8th Avenues. The TopView night tours, including the open-top double-decker, leave from 7th Ave between 47th and 48th St, so the show begins the moment you board.

The enclosed three-hour coach also covers Fifth Avenue and Columbus Circle, and TopView's list of highlights adds Grand Central, the Chrysler Building, One Vanderbilt, the Flatiron Building, the Washington Square Arch, Chinatown and Little Italy.

The Bridges and DUMBO

Two night tours cross the East River. The open-top double-decker crosses the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn, and the enclosed coach covers the Manhattan Bridge and DUMBO with a photo stop there. The Brooklyn Bridge towers got new LED lighting from NYC DOT that began operating in January 2024, with 56 new lights and a cost of $2.4 million, and the 166 necklace lights on the cables were converted to LED in 2021.

The classic DUMBO photo spot is the corner of Washington and Water Streets, where the Empire State Building sits beneath the Manhattan Bridge, whose Brooklyn tower is framed by brick warehouses on Washington Street.

The Empire State Building Lights

The Empire State Building tower lights shine from sunset to 2am daily, and the building says it has over 1,000 LED zones. It changes tower colors for holidays, causes, milestones and cultural events, and its lights page shows a nightly signature hourly sparkle on the live cam. Any night tour passing Midtown sees it, and the building's own hours mean it is lit for the whole evening, whatever time you ride.

The building's lights page does not list a Christmas or Hanukkah color, so do not count on a seasonal scheme.

The New Jersey Side

The minibus tour is the only one that shows you Manhattan from outside it. Liberty State Park in Jersey City is open daily 6am to 10pm and faces the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and the tour gives it a 1-hour stop with the Empty Sky memorial, which honors New Jersey victims of the September 11 attacks. In Hoboken the tour stops 20 minutes at Carlo's Bakery at 95 Washington Street, with another 20 minutes in town and 5 minutes at the Frank Sinatra statue.

The last stop is Hamilton Park in Weehawken, with 20 minutes on top of the Palisades looking at the skyline. The stops are on foot, so this is the night tour that behaves most like a walking evening.

When to Go: Sunset, Season and Clothes

A night tour lives or dies by the hour you pick, and sunset in New York is at 8:30 pm on 21 June and 4:31 pm on 21 December. The sunset figures come from time and date data for New York, the deck information from the operators.

Sunset by Season

The table below shows the extremes of the year, based on the solstices, and what kind of deck you get. Everything in between is a gradual shift, so a spring or fall trip lands somewhere between these two rows.

SeasonSunsetTop deck
Summer (21 June)8:30 pmOpen top is comfortable on a warm evening on the open-top double-decker
Winter (21 December)4:31 pmOpen decks are cold. TopView says its buses get a transparent cover in winter, with free ponchos and lower-level seating in wet weather

What a 6 PM Departure Looks Like

In June, a 6:00 PM departure happens in daylight, because sunset in New York on 21 June is at 8:30 pm. The 8:00 PM departure is the later option. TopView says its Night tour ends at 12 am in summer, and its audio departures run to 12:00 am on Fridays and Saturdays, so there are late options if you want true darkness.

In December the same 6:00 PM departure is a full night tour from the first minute, since sunset on 21 December is at 4:31 pm and it is dark by the time you board. That is also the window when the Big Bus Night Tour becomes the Holiday Lights Night Tour, from 3 December to 4 January. Dress for a winter evening on any open deck: the Central Park January normal is a high of 39.5F (4.2C) and a low of 27.9F (-2.3C), with 8.8 inches of average January snowfall, and the wind on an open deck makes it feel colder. In October the normal is 64.5F (18.1C) high and 51.4F (10.8C) low, which is mild on a covered bus and needs a real jacket upstairs.

Night Tour Tips

Small things that change how a night ride goes, all drawn from the operator rules and the tour listings.

Do

  • Do arrive 30 minutes early for the Big Bus Night Tour, because Big Bus says so for its night tour.
  • Do arrive at least 10 minutes early for the New Jersey minibus, whose listing asks you to meet in front of the Crowne Plaza at 7th Avenue and 51st Street corner ahead of time.
  • Do activate a Big Bus hop-on hop-off ticket in the Big Bus Tours app on the day, because tickets must be opened in the app and Activate pressed, and a printed confirmation will not work for TopView either.
  • Do book the enclosed coach between late autumn and spring, since it covers you while TopView says open buses get only a transparent cover and ponchos in winter.
  • Do pick the 8:00 PM departure in June, because a 6:00 PM ride happens in daylight when sunset is at 8:30 pm.

Don't

  • Don't assume a night tour includes attraction entry, hotel pickup, food or hop-off stops. The open-top tour has no stops and no entry, the coach includes only bottled water and a DUMBO photo stop, and minibus hotel pickup exists only on the private option.
  • Don't buy a separate night tour before checking your day ticket, because Big Bus 48 and 72-hour tickets already include the live-guided night tour and TopView premium passes include one night tour ride.
  • Don't take a Big Bus ticket for New Year's Eve or Thanksgiving, because Big Bus New York operates every day except Thanksgiving and December 31.
  • Don't count on a language other than English on TopView's night rides, because TopView's FAQ says the Brooklyn and Night tours are English only, while its homepage suggests 11 languages.

The bookable night tours on this site run from $48 for the 3-hour enclosed coach with a DUMBO stop, to $69 for the 90-minute open-top double-decker, to $89 for the 4-hour minibus to the New Jersey waterfront. The full comparison with lengths and vehicles is in the table above.

What is the best night bus tour in New York City?

See how the ratings and routes compare across NYC Bus Tours before choosing.

Is there an overnight bus tour of New York City?

No, not among the bookable products here. Night tours run from 90 minutes to 4 hours and return to Midtown. The last TopView audio night departures leave at 11:00 PM Sunday to Thursday and 12:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, which is as late as the night product goes.

Do night bus tours run in winter or in the rain?

Yes. TopView says its buses run in wet weather with free ponchos and lower-level seating, and in winter the buses get a transparent cover. Big Bus notes that severe weather or city events can affect service. If you want a roof guaranteed, the Three-Hour Luxury Bus Tour of NYC at Night is on an enclosed luxury coach at $48.

Is the night tour included in a hop-on hop-off ticket?

On some tickets, yes. Big Bus 48 and 72-hour tickets include the 2-hour live-guided night tour, and TopView premium passes include one ride on its night tour, though the night tours themselves are nonstop with no hop-off. The ticket details are on the TopView NYC page and the Big Bus page.

All three start near Times Square. TopView's night tours, including the open-top tour, leave from 7th Ave between 47th and 48th St, the Big Bus night tour leaves Stop 1 at M&M's World on 7th Ave and W 48th St, the enclosed coach meets on 8th Avenue between W 49th and W 50th Streets, and the minibus meets at 7th Avenue and 51st Street.
